Controlling the effective second-order susceptibility in random quadratic media.
We study systematically the effect of spatial disorder of ferroelectric domains in nonlinear media on the polarization properties of optical frequency conversion. Experimentally, different statistics of domain sizes are created using electric field poling at room temperature. We analyze the evolution of polarization properties of the second- and third-harmonic signals for each created statistic...
متن کاملThe role of ferroelectric domain structure in second harmonic generation in random quadratic media.
We study theoretically and numerically the second harmonic generation in a nonlinear crystal with random distribution of ferroelectric domains. We show that the specific features of disordered domain structure greatly affect the emission pattern of the generated harmonics. This phenomena can be used to characterize the degree of disorder in nonlinear photonic structures.
متن کاملControlling chaos via second-order sliding modes
The problem of ordering chaos by second-order sliding-mode control is addressed. The proposed approach offers an effective, yet simple, solution tackling both the uncertainties affecting the chaotic dynamics and the measurement noise corrupting the feedback signals. The procedure is illustrated making reference to Chua's circuit and the “suboptimal” second-order sliding-mode control algorithm. ...
متن کاملMultiple scattering by random configurations of circular cylinders: second-order corrections for the effective wavenumber.
A formula for the effective wavenumber in a dilute random array of identical scatterers in two dimensions is derived, based on Lax's quasicrystalline approximation. This formula replaces a widely-used expression due to Twersky, which is shown to be based on an inappropriate choice of pair-correlation function.
متن کاملThe period function for second-order quadratic ODEs is monotone∗
Very little is known about the period function for large families of centers. In one of the pioneering works on this problem, Chicone [?] conjectured that all the centers encountered in the family of second-order differential equations ẍ = V (x, ẋ), being V a quadratic polynomial, should have a monotone period function. Chicone solved some of the cases but some others remain still unsolved. In ...
